  • Chimney's Done Right: Chimney Crickets & Hand Soldered Chimneys

Let’s talk about the importance of a tightly sealed chimney and the benefits it offers. We will look at installation options that take your home to the next level and provide a worry free install. By the end you will not only see the benefits of these roofing procedures, but you will fully understand what they are and why you need them to protect your home. Let’s explore what it takes to make sure that your home is protected when you move forward with your next roof replacement or repair. Chimney Crickets: What Is A Cricket? You may be asking yourself what is a chimney cricket anyway? A chimney cricket is sometimes referred to as a roof saddle or chimney diverter. Crickets are small angled roofing structures, typically installed on the uphill slope of the chimney. Chimney crickets are constructed by building a wood sloped structure that sits behind the chimney on the slope running up to it. The height of the cricket is determined by the slope of the roof that it sits on.  The cricket is then covered by weather-resistant materials like aluminum, galvanized steel, copper or sometimes even shingles to provide a seamless finished look. Flashing is then installed around the cricket to further weatherproof the area where the chimney and cricket meet. It is important to remember that if you have cracks or loose mortar on your chimney it is imperative that these issues are repaired as well. Cracks in the chimney cannot stop water from penetrating the chimney even if flashing is installed, so having your chimney evaluated at this time is also a smart decision. Why Might I Need A Cricket? The sole purpose of a chimney cricket is to divert water, snow and debris from accumulating and pooling round the chimney, which can cause leaks and interior damage that no one wants. Crickets are fantastic in helping to prevent ice damming which can cause significant damage to the roof & interior of your home. Not only do crickets protect your roofing system and interior, but they also protect the integrity of the chimney itself. A cricket can help protect the bricks, mortar, and flue of the chimney from the repeated buildup of water and snow accumulation.   Not every chimney will need a chimney cricket, so it’s best to consult with a trusted roofer. Building codes often require a cricket if a chimney is wider than 30 inches or on a sloped roof that butts up to a chimney. Keep in mind that just because a chimney might not meet those requirements, does not mean that your roofer may not recommend one anyway as a precaution, especially if you have already been dealing with recurrent leak issues around your chimney. Remember that it never hurts to get a second opinion or take an extra precaution for peace of mind when it comes to the installation of your roofing system. Crickets can prevent costly repairs and create a safe and efficient chimney system. How much will adding a cricket cost me? Of course you want to know how much this is going to cost. Here’s the good news, if you are considering purchasing a full roof replacement  a cricket can be added for as little as $225.00 per chimney. Since most of the materials are already being purchased for the replacement anyway and removal of the area is already taking place, there is typically enough material to add a cricket for a small up-charge. The bad news… a repair, to add a cricket, can run upwards of $1,800.00. To install a cricket correctly during a repair, shingles have to be carefully removed in the affected area. On top of the removal, materials must be purchased and while only a small amount of material may be needed, unfortunately sometimes these materials are sold in bulk and create a higher cost to purchase. Attempting to build a cricket over existing shingles is a recipe for disaster. Adding a cricket over shingles will create holes in the existing shingles and you risk adding another potential leak issue at which point adding the cricket will potentially fix one problem while causing another. This is why it is imperative to get your roof evaluated by a professional roofer before your next roof replacement . Having your chimney evaluated for a cricket at the time of estimation can potentially save you lots of money in the long run should you run into an issue. For a fraction of the cost you can save yourself a lot of headaches by doing it right the first time. Hand Soldered Chimneys: What Does It Mean To Hand Solder A Chimney? Hand soldering a chimney is the best technique to creating watertight seals where the chimney meets the roof at the flashings. During installation the roofing professional will take a soldering iron or torch, flux and solder wire to create a strong, watertight, durable bond to keep water out of the roofing system and chimney. In case you are wondering, flux is   a chemical substance cleans metal surfaces, removes oxides, and promotes the flow of solder, ensuring a strong bond .  Flux acts as a cleaning agent to prepare the metal for soldering.   Hand Soldering vs Mortar Seal Hand soldering is the most effective way to create a watertight seal around the flashings where the chimney meets the roof. Solder is time tested and a proven method of fusing metal flashings. Soldering has watertight and air-tight seams once the solder cools and hardens. The fuse that conjoins the metal makes an impermeable seal keeping water out of your home. Changes in temperature and added variable weather conditions will cause mortar to crack, split and loosen allowing water to get in and leak into your house. Once water gets behind caulking, it can go through a freeze thaw cycle in winter weather conditions leaving your roof flashings vulnerable to leaks, causing failure. Here at RSG Roofing we only recommend a hand soldered chimney for the best seal possible. How much will hand soldering my chimney cost me? Here at RSG Roofing we hand solder every chimney as part of our installation process on roof installs at no additional cost. We want the best quality product we can offer at a price that is affordable to all. Customer satisfaction is a big part of what we represent and this is one way we can show you our intentions from the start. Creating peace of mind before the install even begins is sure to help you make the easy choice, getting the install done right the first time. Chimney Removal Option: Another option is chimney removal. It is important to talk with your trusted roofer about whether or not chimney removal is an option for your replacement. Things a good roofer will consider is whether your furnace or hot water heater vent through said chimney. While it may seem easier to just be done with it, it may not be an option and should be consulted with a professional. A chimney removal is an additional cost and starts at a minimum of $500.00, but could mean less issues in the future for leaks. Ready To Take The Leap? • Class 4 Shingles Save You Time and Money: An Explanation of Class 4 Shingles and Why to Choose Them

Choosing Class 4 Shingles can help protect your home from the elements and save you time and money in the long run for a small up-charge today. Class 4 shingles are the highest rated, impact resistant, asphalt shingles on the market. Roofs installed with Class 4 shingles are meant to withstand severe weather like hail & wind without cracking, splitting & tearing. With shingles that have such a high rating you won’t have to worry about leaks entering your home. Having a class 4 shingle will keep your roof in tip top shape providing you with saved time having to deal with roof issues, as well as peace of mind during storms. Here are reasons to consider a class 4 shingle for your next roof replacement . How Do Class 4 Shingles Save Me Money? Longevity Class 4 shingles also have a longer life span extending to 50years which is much longer than a traditional shingle ranging from 20-30years. So, not only are these shingles doing a better job protecting your home, but they are also saving you money in the long run. These shingles give you an additional 20 years, in which time you can enjoy and spend your money elsewhere. That’s about doubling the life of your roofing system, saving you a ton not having to replace your roof again during this time! Durability Class 4 shingles have a reinforced polymer-based mesh embedded into the shingles. This mesh strengthens the shingles and reduces cracking from debris from storms. The shingles also have rubber-like polymers added into the asphalt to create a rubberizing effect, making the shingle more flexible when hit by debris. By having a more durable shingle you will have fewer repairs to worry about from roofing issues, again leaving your money where it belongs, in your pocket. Diagram showing how impact resistant shingles work Insurance Discounts Another benefit of class 4 shingles is insurance savings. Insurance companies love to see high quality products installed that aren’t going to warrant claims. Lower class shingles are more likely to be torn up in storms, as discussed earlier in this article. In turn, a high quality product, meant to withstand the elements, will put more money in your pocket. Once you install a class 4 shingle, all you have to do is call your insurance agent and let them know and you are one step closer to a discount on your homeowner’s insurance policy. You will also see potential savings as your insurance only increases based on yearly industry standards instead of increasing due to claims made on your policy. Warranty It’s also important to be aware that most shingle manufactures also offer an extended warranty on class 4 shingles due to their length of life. So, not only is your roofing system going to last longer, but you are also protected longer in case something does go wrong or you run into some sort of manufacture defect. Shingle manufactures offer upwards of 50 year warranties , protecting your roofing system for the lift of the shingles. Increased Home Value By installing class 4 shingles on your home you are also increasing your home’s value. Having a high quality product built to last, can entice buyers and the potentially score you some extra money in your pocket. Buyers love to see a home that is well taken care of and one that is built to last. So, if you are thinking about selling your home at some point, although you won’t necessarily be using that warranty for the full 50 years, you now have a selling point that just might seal the deal. What other benefits are there when choosing class 4 shingles? Curb Appeal On top of all of these benefits, your home will also now stand out from other homes. Class 4 shingles have a slightly more edgy look to set your home apart from everyone else’s, adding curb appeal to your home with the new dual shadow line look featuring deeper, richer shades. Comparison of GAF HDZ Class 3 Shingles vs GAF UHDZ Class 4 Shingles Upgraded StainGuard Protection Here at RSG Roofing we offer GAF’s Timberline UHDZ (Ultra High Definition) Shingles featuring a dual shadow line creating a more textured look. These shingles also offer an enhanced algae protection. A typical dimensional shingle offers a StainGuard Plus limited warranty and the class 4 shingles offer a StainGuard Plus Pro limited warranty protecting against blue-green algae discoloration that can take away from the value of your home. Quality Installation GAF’s LayerLock technology on class 4 shingles also offers a wider nailing zone for installation resulting in fewer mistakes. The LayerLock technology helps the shingles adhere better creating a faster and more precise installation. When installed, the layers bond with the overlapping shingles, providing a strong adhesion between the overlapping layers. The shingles are then sealed down with GAF’s Dura-Grip sealant that is built into the shingles. These attributes are the reasons this shingle holds up so well in storms. The way the shingles are designed creates a stronger wind resistance leaving you with a more durable and long lasting roof. No Maximum Wind Speed Warranty An added benefit in choosing RSG Roofing to install your roof is that we install every roof with GAF accessories as well. As part of our deal, your roof will now qualify for the industry’s first no maximum wind speed warranty. GAF is now offering a 15-year WindProven Warranty with installation of GAF’s Timberline UHDZ shingles and GAF accessories. Now, instead of calling your insurance and raising your rates, you can call GAF if you have wind issues. Information on GAF's No Maximum WindProven Limited Wind Warranty How much will class 4 shingles cost me? On average here at RSG Roofing an upgrade to GAF’s class 4 shingle is only a difference of about $500-$1,000. • Ice & Water Shield: Why Is It Important? How Does It Work?

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home, keeping you and all of your valuables safe from the elements. Without a properly installed roof on your home, you may as not even have one at all. It’s important to install your roof right the first time, that’s why making sure your roof is installed to top standards is an absolute MUST. One of the most important layers on your roof is the first layer after the decking, the leak barrier or ice and water shield. Many states require the installation of ice and water shield in some areas if the roof on roof installations. Ice and water shield helps protect against leaks, rot and mold and protects the structural integrity of your home. Ice and water shield is the first barrier protecting your home against leaks caused by: Ice dams Wind-driven rain Heavy snow buildup A leak barrier is crucial for homes in colder climates that are subject to these potential leak hazards. The most effective installation of Ice and water shield is when it’s installed in critical areas like eaves, valleys, and around roof penetrations such as chimneys, vents, and other exposed areas on the roof. Protecting the Eaves from Ice Dams & Wind-Driven Rain Ice Dams: The eaves, or edges of the roof, are particularly important when it comes to protection, especially when it comes to ice dams. When snow melts on the roof, due to sun exposure and heat escaping from the interior of the home, often times melting snow re-freezes again on the eaves. The eaves tend to be colder which in turn causes ice damming making it critical for ice and water shield to be installed thoroughly in this area. When installed on the eaves, ice and water shield prevents water from backing up behind ice dams, seeping under the shingles and leaking into the home. Installation in this area protects the roof decking from rot and keep water from destroying the interior of the home. Wind-Driven Rain: Wind-driven rains can also cause leak issues on the eaves, especially if the area has lifted shingles. Wind forces are higher during storms at the eaves, hip & ridges often causing shingles to lift. Shingle lifting can occur for a variety of reasons stated below: Improper Shingle Installation - Instances with improper nailing, misalignment or insufficient overlap can make shingles more susceptible to lifting during a storm Roof Aging and Deterioration –Roof aging causes shingles to become brittle and causes them to lose their flexibility often causing lifting with high winds. Poor Attic Ventilation – Improper ventilation can cause heat and water to build up on the decking causing the shingles to age faster and lift. Harsh Weather Conditions – Extreme weather can also cause lifting due to expedited aging of the shingles from the elements. Manufacturing Defects – Occasionally a manufacture defect can cause shingles to lift prematurely. When wind blows up these shingles in these vulnerable areas it leaves the layers below exposed to moisture, Ice and water is absolutely necessary in the eaves to protect from an incident such as this. Protecting the Valleys form Ice Dams & Heavy Snow Buildup The valleys of the roof, where two slopes meet, are just as important when it comes to preventing water from entering the home. Valleys are particularly vulnerable to ice damming because they collect a high concentration of melting snow and rainwater as water flows down both slopes from the larger areas above. Ice damming often occurs in this area from snow piling up between the two slopes. When snow accumulates in this area it prevents proper drainage of melting snow from the area, in turn causing a potential risk for water entering the home through the exposed area. Due to this buildup that occurs during the winter months it is essential to install ice and water in this area as well. Example of ice damming in the valley of the roof. Protecting Other Exposed Areas and Penetrations It is important to also take other open exposed areas on the roof into consideration for protection. Areas such as; chimneys, skylights, exhaust vents, pipes, hips, ridges and rakes are all points of exposure and pose a risk for water entering the home. Wind-driven rain plays a factor in exposing these areas, as discussed above. If these areas are not properly sealed water will find its way into the cracks and leak into your home. It is important to always consider these areas during an install. Ice and water shield in these areas is one more step to assuring your home stays dry and protected. As much as ice and water shield can be a saving grace, if not installed correctly the product well fail and leave a homeowner with leaks and headaches. When installing ice and water shield, the adhesive layers on the product, must overlap to ensure a water tight seal preventing water from penetrating between. Ice and water shield, installed correctly, creates a better seal around nails in the decking compared to a traditional underlayment such as felt paper. With the installation of ice and water shield it creates a barrier protecting the integrity of the roof even if water does happen to make it under the shingles. Protecting the different aspects of your roof can extend the life of your roof for years to come. Having your home protected from the outside threats from weather can help ease your mind and save more time for investing that energy elsewhere. Let’s re-cap the benefits of ice and water shield: Prevents Leaks Protects Roof Decking Extends Roof Life Span Peace of Mind While installation of ice and water shield doesn’t necessarily need to be installed on the entire roof, here at RSG Roofing we install every roof to these standards even when code does not require such an extensive installation. As an added precaution we install a double row of ice and water shield on eaves larger than 12” to assure adequate coverage into the interior warm walls.
